The Fair Housing Act and guidelines issued by the U.S. Department of Housing ensure that emotional support animal (ESA) owners are not discriminated. To prove that an animal is an ESA, landlords can require the tenant to submit “reasonable supporting documentation” from a licensed healthcare professional, which is more commonly known as an “ESA letter.”
